Vintage Sekt Brut Nature 2011 in the limelight

With its latest baby, Cantina Kaltern shows that the elevated sites around Lake Caldaro are also ideal for making sekt. The classic method of vinification and maturation – that of a blanc de blancs champagne - was employed for the Chardonnay base wine. The result after 48 months spent resting on the lees: a wonderfully distinctive vintage, which will be making its debut at Vinitaly in Verona from April 9-12.

Chardonnay grapes from Castelvecchio, at 612 meters above sea-level the highest district in the municipality, have that lively acid structure and moderate sugar concentrations that are ideal for making sekt.

“The base wine for the first edition of our sekt is from the concentrated and harmonious 2011 vintage. It was the excellent quality of the grapes that persuaded us to embark on our sparkling wine project,” says Gerhard Sanin, former winemaker at Erste+Neue and now head of wine growing in Kaltern, whose brainchild the Kaltern sekt is.

Disgorgement after four years of aging in the bottle was performed by Andrea Moser, who has been in Kaltern since 2014 and is now the oenologist at the combined winery. It was also his idea to produce the wine as a brut nature: “Bone-dry and with zero dosage, our sekt is the product of the perfect interaction of climate, soil and the human hand – a ‘metodo classico’ in which nature can develop freely, and with every sip you taste Kaltern and enjoy the spirit of life on the lake.”

The Brut Nature 2011 will be making its wine trade debut at Vinitaly in Verona (hall 6, stand C2) on April 9 - 12. At the same time, the sekt will be launched on the market via selected outlets and at the Wine Center in Kaltern, where it will be available at a price of € 19.90 per bottle.
